Ali “Prince Ali” Eslami and Phil “The Unabomber” Laak has won the match of limit holdem against the best computer software.
The University of Alberta researchers that had been recorded to the Guiness Book of World Records for their unbeatable checkers software are also well known in the poker community. Their AI poker software had been the winner of the first world poker championship among computers. And they decided to organize a match of the best human poker pros against their software.
So the conditions were: limit holdem, 10/20. The competition consisted of four 500-hand duplicate matches. In each duplicate match, the same series of cards were dealt in two parallel Man versus Machine matches, with teammates playing the opposite hands in each game. At the end of the match, the total number of chips won or lost by each team is added together to determine the winning team. This format was used to reduce the element of random luck to a minimum, and get a much better indication of the differences in skill.
So the game was held during July 23-24, 2007. The first session showed insignificant advantage of the Machine with 7BB ahead (according to the rules of competition the advantage of less than 25BB per session was considered a draw). And the second session had been won by the Machine.
But both session held July 24 have been won by humans who were able to find some foibles in machine’s play.
The results could be found at the official page of the competition http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~games/poker/man-machine/Results/

The competitors were defined by the researchers of the University of Alberta. They have flung down the gauntlet to a man who have already beaten their software. Phil Laak has participated in that kind of match with University of Alberta software in 2005 and have won that match. But it should be mentioned that match was a kind of blitz so it shouldn’t be considered to seriously.
BTW though Phil is mostly known by his namable appearance his analytical skills are also should be noticed. Phil earned a degree in mechanical engineering before becoming a professional player. Phil had the right to choose his partner for that match. And his immediate choice was Ali Eslami.

Ali is an extremely successful high-stakes cash game player, playing in some of the biggest games in the world, from $400-800 betting limits up to $1000-2000 per bet. He plays a wide variety of games, but is particularly adept at short-handed and heads-up Limit Texas Hold'em.
Ali is a sterling example of the new generation of sharp, young, technically oriented, and mathematically savvy poker players. He worked as a computer consultant before discovering his prodigious talent for poker. Ali is very familiar with the state-of-the-art in poker bot technology, having read (and understood!) the Computer Poker Research Group technical papers. That means he knows their strengths and weaknesses, and can exploit their vulnerabilities. He is also a deep strategic thinker, and can accurately predict the match strategies the other side might employ
So the combination of skills of universal “The Unabomber” and top specialist “Prince Ali” was the really best choice for humans.

• The game for the event will be two-player Limit Texas Hold'em.
• A team of two humans will play against a team of two computer programs (both being copies of the Polaris poker technology).
• Teammates will play the same series of hands, but from opposite sides (one North, the other South) to reduce the element of luck to a minimum.
• No communication between teammates is permitted during play.
• All players (bot and human) will connect to an independent poker server run by Poker Academy (www.poker-academy.com), which will administer the parallel games.
• Each series of cards will be generated randomly, based on a combination of independent seeds provided by the human team, representatives of the bot team, the match arbiter, and the match administrators (no single entity determines the cards to be dealt).
• There will be four duplicate sessions of 500 hands each, played over two days (two sessions per day).
• The human team will receive an additional $5,000 for each session that is won by more than +25 small bets (+0.05 sb/h).
• The human team will receive an additional $2,500 for each session that is won or lost by +25 small bets or less (a statistical tie).
• All hands played will be made publicly available after the completion of the event.

And also if you possess a copy of Poker Academy you also may play with Polaris (the software Phil and Ali had played). You just have to visit Poker Academy Online. If you don’t use Poker Academy you may download their free Demo.

So the main result from my point of view is that poker had remained one of the spheres where humans are still better than computers. I believe that we still could do it better especially in NL holdem. But the match has also showed that computers are getting closer.
